Our #12 Canvas is constructed of 100% cotton and features a tightly woven flat duck weave. This fabric is extremely versatile and easy to work with. #12 cotton duck is very popular as an artist canvas and works well with both acrylic and oil base paint. Typically, an artist will stretch this canvas on wooden stretcher bars and coat canvas with a layer or two of a white sealant called gesso. Selecting your Cotton Duck Canvas

Canvas is classified by weight in ounces only when it is a single filled canvas weave. Single filled canvas is less dense than number duck canvas. Number duck canvas is double filled and much stronger. Number duck canvas has a universal numbering system starting with #12. As the numbers go down, the material gets heavier. There is a mathematical equation that transposes the # into ounces per square yard.
